Explore Georgetown World Heritage Sites by Night

Exploring Georgetown World Heritage Sites by night is one way to enjoy the evening breeze of Penang, while unraveling its beauty at the same time.

Pengkalan Weld (Weld Quay)
Pengkalan Weld (Weld Quay)

We cycled 10 minutes straight to 1. Pengkalan Weld (Weld Quay) and parked our bikes in front of Church Street Pier at Tanjung Marina. We walked along the pier to take a closer look of the beautiful structures of the fine dining QE II Penang and Hai Nan Town restaurant.

Little India
Little India

We left Pengkalan Weld for another 10-minute ride to 2. Little India. Upon reaching the Lebuh Pasar and Lebuh Queen junction, people, colors, shopping and food caught our attention. A stall that sells fried Indian delicacies with non-stop queue of customers attracted us. We talked to M.A. Sulaiman, the owner of the stall, who has been operating the business for 20 years. The reasonably-priced and delicious delicacies have attracted local and foreign customers to frequent his stall.

We packed M.A. Sulaiman’s delicacies and sat at another stall by the road side for “Teh Tarik”, hesitating to leave the vibrant atmosphere of the Little India.

Subsequently, we rushed to Padang Kota Lama to catch a glimpse of the sunset. Padang Kota Lama is an ideal site to admire the colorful lights of the 3. Penang City Hall and Municipal Town Hall switch on upon dark. Located within Padang Kota Lama is 4. Fort Cornwallis, established in 1786 and named after the Governor-General in Bengal, Charles Cornwallis. The star-shaped fort was originally built to protect Penang from Kedah and pirates. Prison cells, weapon storage area, a chapel, a harbor light, and the original flagstaff and several old bronze canons from the past can still be seen. There are also two food courts located at Padang Kota Lama for food lovers.

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion
Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion

The last stop of our cycling tour before the 5. Penang famous food dinner is the 6. Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion. This UNESCO World Heritage Site which was regarded as one of the greatest mansions in the world (Lonely Planet 2011) is now a home-stay with 16 uniquely themed bedroom suites.

The beauty of this cycling tour was that we covered a lot of places in a relatively short amount of time which would not be possible if done with a motor vehicle. The entire journey was 6.07km timed at 3:47 hours.
